What is the truth about benzodiazepine medications? What should people know before taking them, and what about when individuals are trying to get off them?

As someone who took the benzo medication Xanax for about 14 years and then quit the medications for good, I know firsthand the potential benefits and risks of using these medications. I lived with side-effects, tolerance effects, and eventually withdrawal symptoms. But my initial prescribing doctor talked about none of these things. I took the medications basically unchecked, and then when I decided to taper them I had little guidance or even acknowledgement from the medical establishment.
