Why Do Doctors Gaslight?
Oct 20, 2025
Why do medical doctors and psychiatrists gaslight patients who come into their offices complaining of prescription drug withdrawal symptoms? That is the question I will explore in this video.
Years back when I got off of Paxil and Xanax, I experienced SSRI withdrawal and benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms. I only went into a doctor’s office several times, but when I did I was made to question my reality. Rather than offering understanding and advice regarding my withdrawal situation and benzo tapering, I was met with deflection and psychological manipulation: the doctor’s basically ignore the withdrawal issues and made comments intended to downplay or deny what I was experiencing.
The definition of gaslighting is this: psychologically manipulating someone in order to make them question their sanity, powers of reasoning or reality. This definitely applies when it comes to how doctors treat patients experiencing the many symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal and antidepressant withdrawal. But why?
In this video I offer a few thoughts as to why this occurs, and I also give some advice to those of who you are in the middle of withdrawal and trying to reduce or eliminate prescription medications in your life.
