Withdrawal Lies! Focus on These Truths Instead!
Jul 13, 2026
One of the many ways in which antidepressant and/or benzo withdrawal can be challenging involves self-talk and thought life. There are all sorts of ways in which negative self-talk can become amplified by the fears and pains of withdrawal, and the cumulative effect of all this can create a destructive framing of your healing situation. If you are tapering an antidepressant or benzo medication or working through an ongoing withdrawal & healing situation, then perhaps you’ve struggled with feelings of discouragement and low self-esteem brought on by repeated negative thoughts. Perhaps you recognize some of the following lies:
- I’m not accomplishing anything in healing
- The process is nothing but needless and worthless pain
- I did something wrong, and that is why I’m suffering
- I’ll never improve
These are just a few of the lies that withdrawal tells a person. But there are important truths to focus on instead, truths such as:
- You are accomplishing a great deal and pursuing a very worthwhile goal in healing
- You are in a forward moving process of healing, and even in the midst of pain there are improvements happening
- Withdrawal is difficult because of the transitions that are happening in the body and mind, not because you “did something wrong”
- You will see further improvements with more time and self-care
